While the number of deaths in Syria has surpassed the 4000 according to the UN, Basharal-Assad continues to deny the facts. In an interview with ABC News, the Syrian presidenthas maintained Wednesday that he never ordered the army to kill demonstrators anddenied responsibility for the deaths of thousands of people.
"It does not kill its people ... No government in the world does not kill its own people, unless they are led by a madman, "dared to Syrian President added, conceding, however," somemistakes "committed by members of the armed forces.
"A break from reality, or of madness"
The statement of al-Assad was quick to react. The spokesman for the State Department, Mark Toner, shocked, has not been asked to comment on the interview. "Either he has lostthe authority he had over Syria, or it is just a toy, or he is completely out of touch," he saidto reporters.
He also reiterated the U.S. position that considers Bashar al-Assad as illegitimate to govern a country. "There is a break with reality, or contempt or, as he put it, madness, I donot know," asks again the voice of American diplomacy.
